The Project
Through skilled conservation and repair, St John’s Church’s historic glazing and timber features were carefully restored and revitalised
St John’s Church, Chatham was one of a number of projects which has been granted funding through the Future High Streets Fund and the National Lottery Heritage Fund to assist in the regeneration of the town centre. The grade II listed Church has been restored as a place of worship and community hub.
The Church contains examples of work from some notable stained glass studios, such as; Alexander Gibbs & Co, Lavers & Westlake, London and Ward & Hughes, London. Our works to the stained glass ranged from;
A large number of panels required removal for studio restoration. Our team carefully removed these panels from site, whilst temporarily glazing the openings. In most cases, the stained glass panels were re-leaded, using like for like lead cames to size and section, conserving and consolidating any broken glass or if absolutely necessary, painting new and inserting, matching the original as closely as possible. The restored panels were made watertight and re-glazed upon completion.
A full conservation clean to both internal and external surfaces, using approved methods and materials, monitoring our progress in great detail to ensure the stability of the original artwork.
A vast number of in situ repairs were carried out to stabilise any damage or completely replaced to ensure the structural integrity of a damaged area, without the requirement of removing full window sets.
A full preparation and decoration service to the internal/external frame work and supporting metal work.
We templated, supplied and fit 14 no. new oak cills matching the original profile as closely as possible - including profiling, matching and fitting areas of decayed or missing timber substrates.
